Young pets are so much fun but they require special care to keep them healthy and growing strong. Just as the needs of infants are different than those of teen-agers and adults, puppies and kittens need different care than their older counterparts. Because of their size, they are more susceptible to dehydration, parasites and other concerns. In older pets, these conditions may cause discomfort but in young animals they can cause serious illness and even death.

If possible, it is best if your pet is at least 8 weeks old before bringing it home. This is to ensure that it is weaned and can eat on its own. We recommend scheduling an appointment to see one of our veterinarians for a full physical exam within a few days of coming to live with you. Please bring the history provided by the breeder or shelter to your first exam. It is also a good idea to bring a stool sample so we can check for internal parasites.

At that first visit, we will assess your pet’s needs and create an individualized plan for vaccinations, parasite control and overall care. We will also offer suggestions for the best types of food and treats for optimum growth. Be sure to bring your questions or concerns to this first visit! As your pet care partners, we are devoted to providing the best veterinary care and the support you need to feel confident and knowledgeable about raising your new puppy or kitten.

Puppies and kittens receive some protection from disease by nursing but that immunity decreases upon weaning. Your pet will need a series of vaccines given every 3 weeks until it is 16 weeks old to booster those immunities. At each visit, the doctor will weigh your pet to make sure it is growing at a proper rate. We will also discuss spay or neuter; care of your pet’s coat, ears, and nails; housetraining; socialization; and basic obedience training.
